As an expert in the event planning industry, I have had the pleasure of organizing and attending numerous family-friendly events in southwestern Michigan. This beautiful region is known for its stunning beaches, charming small towns, and rich history. However, what many people may not know is that it also offers a wide variety of fun and engaging events for families to enjoy.
The South Haven Blueberry Festival
One of the most popular events in southwestern Michigan is the South Haven Blueberry Festival. Held annually in early August, this festival celebrates the region's blueberry harvest with a weekend full of activities and entertainment for all ages. The festival kicks off with a parade featuring local marching bands, floats, and of course, plenty of blueberries.Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy live music, a classic car show, a craft fair, and a blueberry pie-eating contest. Kids will love the carnival rides and games, as well as the chance to meet Blueberry Queen and her court. But the highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the blueberry pancake breakfast. Held on Saturday morning, this delicious meal features fresh blueberries picked from local farms. It's a must-try for any blueberry lover!
The Kalamazoo County Fair
For over 150 years, the Kalamazoo County Fair has been a beloved tradition for families in southwestern Michigan. This week-long event takes place in August and offers a wide range of activities and entertainment for all ages. From carnival rides and games to live music and animal shows, there's something for everyone at the fair. Kids will love visiting the petting zoo, watching pig races, and participating in hands-on activities at the Kids' Zone. And for the adults, there are plenty of food vendors serving up delicious fair favorites like corn dogs, funnel cakes, and cotton candy. But the fair isn't just about fun and games. It also showcases the region's agricultural heritage with livestock shows, 4-H exhibits, and a farmers market.
It's a great opportunity for families to learn about where their food comes from and support local farmers.
ArtPrize
While not specifically geared towards families, ArtPrize is an event that everyone can enjoy. Held in Grand Rapids every fall, this international art competition features over 1,000 works of art displayed throughout the city. And the best part? It's completely free!Families can spend a day exploring the city and discovering unique and thought-provoking pieces of art. Kids will love the interactive installations and outdoor sculptures, while parents can appreciate the diverse range of mediums and styles on display. In addition to the art, there are also various events and activities for families to participate in, such as workshops, artist talks, and hands-on projects. And at the end of the competition, visitors can vote for their favorite piece to win the People's Choice Award.
The Harvest Festival at Crane Orchards
No trip to southwestern Michigan is complete without a visit to Crane Orchards in Fennville. And during the fall season, they host a Harvest Festival that is perfect for families looking for some autumn fun. The festival features a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin picking, and apple cider donuts - all quintessential fall activities. But what sets this event apart is their famous u-pick apples. Families can wander through the orchard and pick their own apples straight from the tree. It's a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage. And for the adults, there's also a wine tasting room on-site where they can sample some of the region's best wines while the kids play.
